CHAPTER 16

CHLOE

I wake up pressed against a hard, warm surface. My lips feel chapped, despite the small puddle of drool slowly crusting down my chin. When I look down with a squinty eye, I notice that the hard, warm surface is Varrek. He emits heat like a furnace, and even though he’s all solid, rippling muscle, he’s also the perfect pillow. I didn’t wake up once during the night.

I feel my cheeks turn red as I quickly wipe away my drool from his chest. Then I hear a low rumble. Varrek’s looking at me with those sparkling green eyes and laughing.

“Your efforts are futile, little human. I have been admiring your pool of saliva for some time now.” His voice is throaty and deep from sleep, and I’d be lost in it if it weren’t for the crushing embarrassment I’m feeling right now.

I use the sleeve of my shirt to wipe away the dried slobber on my face as Varrek rolls us over so that I’m beneath his massive, imposing body. He rubs the tip of his nose against mine. “You have never looked so radiant.”

He’s still got that smirk on his face, so I know he’s teasing me.

“Shut up.” I playfully shove against his heavy chest as his chuckle deepens. Then my eyes stray to his bandaged shoulder, and I can see blood seeping through the center of it. “How does this feel today? Any better?” I point at the wound without touching it.

“Better,” he mutters as he looks down. “It feels better than it looks, I assure you.”

“That’s good. But you’re going to take it easy today, right? Let that healing salve do its thing?”

“I train with my warriors each day. This little cut will not change that,” he says dismissively.

“Seriously? What if you fall and land on your shoulder? Or what if it gets cut in the same spot, making it even deeper? And it gets infected?” I ask, my voice pleading. “Can’t you take one day off?”

He brushes a lock of hair off my forehead. “You worry for me.”

“Of course I do!”

“I suppose that depends.” His grin turns downright devilish. He lowers his head to my neck and presses a kiss to my pulse. “Are you taking this day off as well?”

A shiver races down my spine, and my toes curl. I’m tempted to play hooky and spend the day in bed with Varrek, I really am, but the fear of being seen as lazy by the clan is too strong. It doesn’t matter that I’m in bed with the leader of the clan. I want to be accepted by all of them, and that means earning my place here. On my own. Without his help.

“I wish I could. But Nalba’s letting me borrow one of her gowns for Maevstra, and she was going to let me try it on today.” I twirl his silver hair in my fingers, and I’m still amazed by the feel of it. It’s like silk. Thick, lustrous silk.

He bristles at the mention of her name, but then his features soften.
